The best Spanish hurdlers at WIT Madrid2025
Two weeks to enjoy the final of the World Indoor Tour in Madrid, which will be held on February 28 at the Gallur track. This event will bring together the best athletes in the world and will be the perfect setting for a race that promises strong emotions: the men's 60m hurdles, with the presence of, among others, the best national hurdlers.
We will have the complete podium of the 110 m hurdles of the Spanish Outdoor Absolute Championship held last year in La Nucía with Quique Llopis, Asier Martinez and Abel JordanIn that race, Quique broke his personal record by achieving a fantastic 13.09, the second best Spanish mark in history. This was just one more milestone in his great 2024 season, which began with a fourth place in the world indoor championships in Glasgow 2024 in the 60m hurdles. Months later, at the European Championships in Rome he achieved his first international medal at an absolute level, climbing to the second step of the podium as runner-up in the European Championships in the 110m hurdles and closing a dream season with his Olympic debut in Paris, where he amazed everyone with his brilliant fourth place in the final. Quique already knows what it is like to run fast on the Gallur track, in 2023 he equalled Orlando Ortega's national record at the Spanish Short Track Championships with a time of 7.48. This year Quique will seek to get closer, and why not, beat that best time of 7.48 on a tartan that he knows perfectly. In her first indoor races of the season she has made progress, having already competed on three occasions and is now just hundredths of a second away from her national record (7.50 in Valencia just over a week ago).
Next to him will be Asier Martinez, in what will be a new duel after what may happen days before in the Spanish Absolute Championship, which will also be held on the Madrid track of Gallur. Asier has a best time of 13.14, the third best absolute in history, only surpassed by Orlando Ortega (13.04) and Quique himself (13.09). Indoors he also has the third best record in history behind the same men with a time of 7.49 achieved this past year, just one hundredth of a second away from the national record. In addition, Asier already knows what it is like to get on a world podium in the 110m hurdles; he did so in 2022 when he won bronze in Oregon while still under 23. A month later he was crowned European champion in Munich, signing what was his best season so far, in which his fourth place at the indoor world championships in Belgrade in March of that same year should also be highlighted. Her honours include two Olympic participations (Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024), achieving a creditable sixth place in Tokyo at just 21 years old. Last year she was just a hair away from the European medal in Rome, finishing fourth which returned her to the world elite.
Along with them we will have the discovery of 2024, the young Abel Jordan, an athlete based in the United States. This athlete has an incredible duality, taking advantage of his speed for the hurdles event. Last season he began by achieving the fifth best mark in national history in 60 m with a time of 6.59 (Spanish under-23 record), followed by a Spanish under-23 record in the 100 m with 10.18. In addition, he was crowned the fastest man in the country in La Nucía and, later, he did the same in his category at the Spanish under-23 Championships in Burgos. He also made his debut as an absolute international at the 2024 European Championships in Rome with the 4x100 m relay. However, Abel's heart is with the hurdles, in which he has already shown that he is at the level of high-calibre athletes: in La Nucía he achieved a surprising third place, only surpassed by Quique and Asier with a time of 13.55, the fourth best under-23 in history. This 2025 he has already shown his form with great marks made in the United States: 6.62 in 60 m at the beginning of February and a personal best of 7.59 in 60 m hurdles, just 4 hundredths behind Asier's Spanish under-23 record.
The World Indoor Tour in Madrid will not only be a great prelude to the European Short Track Championships in Apeldoorn at the beginning of March, but will also be an opportunity to see the best national hurdlers go head to head in a world-class meeting.
